Visions 2000 | Community Services Program

Community service is an integral part of the curriculum. Through service to their school and community, students develop leadership skills, empathy and an awareness of social issues, as well as gaining valuable work experience. They help with a variety of school events and provide support to local groups serving seniors, the intellectually handicapped, younger students and the community at large. Community service is a condition of graduation at Lakeside, whereby all students are expected to complete a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer work each year from Sec. 1 to 5.

The Community Service Program, co-ordinates and tracks the students’ community service activities. Programs and activities are co-coordinated both in and out of the school. Students are also encouraged to find other activities where they may offer their services. If they are uncertain as to whether the activity is eligible for community service hours, they may contact the program co-coordinator.

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that their community service requirements are met and that the hours are submitted to the community service office, room 202. Parents are encouraged to assist their children in finding avenues to complete their hours and to reinforce the importance of community service to their personal development and to that of the
community.

Public Speaking

Every student at Lakeside, from Secondary I - V prepares a public speaking presentation. Finalists from each grade level deliver their speech to the student body in an assembly.

Science Fair

All students enrolled in the Science course at Lakeside have the opportunity to develop Science Fair projects for display. The projects are all judged and the best projects are displayed at the Bell Montreal Regional Science & Technology Fair held annually.

Grade 7 Camp

All grade 7’s are invited to participate in a High School orientation activity planned and organized by grade 11 Leadership students. This prepares the incoming grade 7 students for a successful integration into High School.

Field Trips

There is a major field trip planned for the students of each level, secondary I - V. All activities are linked to the broad areas of learning according to the QEP and IBO: health and well being, personal and career planning, environmental awareness, citizenship and community life, approaches to learning and human ingenuity.

Extra-Curricular Activities

  • The regular school program is the student’s number one priority. School work should not suffer due to the involvement in any activity.

  • Any student not well enough to participate in all classes on a specific day will also be incapable of participating in an extra-curricular activity.

  • Cooperation and good rapport with staff is necessary. Teachers give their time to run an activity and expect to receive the help and support of students and parents.

  • Any student suspended from school is not permitted to participate in any school activity while under suspension.

  • School fees must be paid in order to participate in any extra-curricular activity or trip.

Intramural Sports

Intramural sports are offered to all students, with the emphasis placed on participation rather than skill. The intramural program is normally played during the lunch hour. The following sports are usually offered:

Basketball Badminton
Volleyball Track and Field
Soccer Dodgeball

Interscholastic Sports

It is the policy of the school to have a user fee for all students involved with an interscholastic team. This will be a nominal fee, as teams will still be subsidized by school funds. Inter-school sports are offered in the following categories:

Bantam (under 14 years)
Midget (under 16 years)
Juvenile (under 18 years)

All students are encouraged to try out for these teams and are chosen on the basis of skill and attitude. The various team sports are:

Lacrosse Cross Country Running
Basketball Badminton
Volleyball Rugby
Swimming Soccer
Track & Field

Physical Education uniforms and running shoes are required by all girls and boys participating in the regular Physical Education classes, lunch time activities, after- school practices, the intramural program, and the interscholastic program. Students who wish to compete in the G.M.A.A. (the Board’s inter-scholastic league of competition) will be required to pay an extra fee, which will be determined by the sport and the area of competition.

A History of some of Lakeside's GMAA Medals

Each student is issued an Agenda Book at the beginning of the school year. The cost of this agenda book is included in the school fees. This book should be carried by the student to each class and used to write down homework assignments. This book is also used as a hall pass if students must leave class for any reason as well as for parent/school communication. If the student loses their agenda, they will be expected to purchase a new one from the school at a cost of $8.00

Lakeside Academy Yearbook

Our yearbook is a pleasing record, in pictures and words, of our friends, our school activities and ourselves.

In “Phoenix” you will find all the enjoyable aspects of school life recorded. Dress-down day, the sports, band and music programs and school performances will be given prominence. Poems, sketches and drawings from students throughout the school will ensure that our yearbook will be a quality product which no student will want to be without.

All students will be receiving their own copy of the school yearbook, which is included in their school fees. The Phoenix yearbook is published and distributed in June.
