GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
THERE ARE SEVERAL
WAYS STUDENTS MAY MAKE UP COURSES.
GRADE 7 to 9 STUDENTS
Students may be asked to attend Summer
School. It is generally suggested for students in English, French or
Math who achieve 60% to 65%.
It may be required for students
who obtain 45% to 59%. A student who fails in June and does not
successfully complete the summer school program may be asked to repeat
the subject.
(For the 2009 Summer School brochure, click
here.)
GRADE 10 STUDENTS
Students write Provincial exams, so
regular summer school is not appropriate. Students may re-write a final
exam (Supplemental) in the major subjects in August and the exam will
be worth 100%. The board does offer a one week review for students who
are interested. For more information, please read the board's Summer
School brochure.
(Note: you must sign up ahead of
time!)
This
is the first year of the new Math
courses reaching grade 10. Summer school will offer both a one week and
four week review of 10 Math 404 (Cultural, Scientific and Technical)
leading to an exam worth 100% in August. There will also be a bridging
course for students who would like to move from Math 404 (Cultural,
Scientific and Technical ) to Math 506 (Technical and Scientific).
GRADE 11 STUDENTS
1. A grade 11 student may also write the August supplemental exams in any
subjects they have failed; where offered. The list of available exams
is listed in the 2009 Summer School brochure. Click here.
2. Another alternative is to
attend Adult Education Summer
School. This is the complete course(s); not a review! Seniors
who promise to make up a prerequisite in this way are sometimes
conditionally accepted at certain CEGEPs if their other marks are
otherwise good.
WARNING: A student who does this
is not allowed back into a regular High School in September.
For more information, please see
the Adult Education Summer brochure. (2009 schedules not yet available)

CEGEP
MAKEUP COURSES IN THE SUMMER
The CEGEPs also offer a series of makeup courses in the summer for
students who have graduated but are missing specific courses. THE CREDITS FROM THESE COURSES MAY NOT
BE TRANSFERRED BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL.
Generally the CEGEPs
offer Math 436, Chem 534 and Physics 534. Although there are no high
school credits for these courses, the CEGEPs will generally place a
successful student at a higher level in that subject. One of these
summer courses may allow a student to go into (e.g.) a Science program
without having to enter an entire remedial program. nb. Grade 10 and down: these codes are
incorrect, although I expect to see something comparable.
4. A student may also choose to do
one of these courses (especially if they have been refused for
CEGEP because of missing prerequisites or even poor grades.) during the
Fall term at Continuing Education.
For information on what CEGEPs offer what summer courses and how taking
one would affect a student's placement, you will have to contact the
CEGEPs directly.

Abbott CEGEP courses, Click

5. A GRADE 11 GRAD MAY ALSO BE ACCEPTED
INTO AN ENTIRE CEGEP REMEDIAL
PROGRAM. THEY ARE LISTED BELOW.
(What you are reading are my notes on the programs,
sometimes written several years ago. I have, however, put in links to
the actual CEGEP source. It will be
more up-to-date!)
MAKEUP
PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO TAKE
SCIENCE AT CEGEP BUT ARE MISSING SOME MATH,
CHEM, OR MATH
There
are a variety of
Science
make-up
courses for students who want to go into Science but
either did not take or failed their
high school science courses. Each CEGEP has taken a
different approach to the problem.
Please note that in most cases the program adds either
a semester or a full year to the CEGEP
program. These programs change yearly. For up-to-date information,
contact the CEGEP directly.

DAWSON CEGEP
DEVELOPMENTAL SCIENCE
Students stay together.
Teachers co-ordinate their
efforts.
Students must have their
Secondary
V
diploma.
Ideally should have done
Chem 534,
Physics
534, and Math 536.
Marks are between 60 to
70%.
(Under
70)
This student will take
three years
to
graduate.
It is better to apply to
Developmental
Science if a student is marginal since these students are taken care of before a
poor (e.g.) Health Science student is offered a space here.
EXPLORATIONS
SCIENCE
This is designated for high
school
students coming in who have not taken all of their high school pre-requisites.
Students also stay together
&
the
prof's co-ordinate.
The ideal student is
missing one or more of Phys.
Sci.
436, Chem 534, and Physics 534.
He/she should have Math 436!
This program will take two
semesters.
Student then transfers to one of the two science programs.

PATHWAYS TO
SCIENCE I
This
is a one or two semester program for students who want to apply to
pre-university Natural Science but lack one of M536, Chemistry or
Physics. To be eligible you must have at least 70% in Math 436 and
Physical Science 436. nb. This is NOT for students who took these
courses and failed them.
PATHWAYS TO
SCIENCE II
This one or two semester program is for a student who
wants to get into Science but has marginal high school marks.
