What To Do
l. Pick up an application package from Mr. Corbett in mid-May (not yet received) or register on-line (preferred). The web address is below.
2. You may fill out and mail your Loans and Bursaries application directly or complete it by internet. If you have any questions, however, stop! Save the application if you are doing it on-line. Telephone the college or university you will be attending in September to ask your question or make an appointment (before the middle of June) to visit the Financial Aid Officer. At John Abbott, call Ms. Annie Proulx, at 457 6610 Local 5540. For Marianopolis, call Lina Rubertucci at 931-8792 Local 259. For Vanier, call 744-7500 Local 7883. For Dawson, call Yvonne Dudley, 931-8731 Local 1186. For trade school contacts, please see me.
n.b. You may now apply at any time, but since the process takes up to 8 weeks, an application after June 30 means that you may not have the money when classes start.
What Are My Chances Of Obtaining Aid?
This depends on the amount of your parents' current income, the number of dependent children in the family, and if they are living at home or are away at college. In general, it is safe to say that anyone whose GROSS FAMILY INCOME is in the $25,000 to $45,000 range is advised to apply. Families below this range are likely to get considerable financial aid (though it also depends on the number of children in the family, how many are away at University, etc.). Families with income well in excess of this amount, unless they have many children or a special financial situation, are not likely to receive much aid.
The actual amount will be calculated by the Ministry of Education and an interest free loan of up to $2005 (amount subject to change yearly) will be issued. The Ministry will also calculate a possible bursary. The bursary does NOT have to be paid back. The loan interest starts six months after graduation.
On the site listed below you will see CALCULATOR which will estimate your loan/bursary. YOUR-FIRST-APPLICATION is a good place to start the actual application.
n.b. If in doubt, at least run the CALCULATOR.
