Early Dismissal

If a student must leave during the school day, a note requesting early dismissal must be written in the agenda and brought to the office. If an emergency arises during the morning or the afternoon sessions, a student may leave school only after signing out at the office. We will contact a parent for permission. The student is required to bring a note to the office the following day for our records.

Attendance

Regular attendance is expected of everyone. Students who are habitually absent or excused for part of the day jeopardize their academic success. Parents are asked to ensure that students attend faithfully and are absent only through illness or unavoidable circumstances. Parents must advise the office when students will be absent for the day.

A Parent/Guardian must sign and date a note (found in the student agenda), stating the reason and the duration of the absence. The student must bring their agenda to the office on the first day of their return.

Punctuality

Students are expected to be punctual and to attend all classes and chosen extra-curricular activities. The interruption of lessons and the inconveniencing of fellow students are not acceptable and, consequently, disciplinary action will result.

Classes begin at 8:55 a.m. A student who arrives after 8:55 a.m. will be marked late by the homeroom teacher. Any student arriving after 8:55 a.m. must report to the office. Students arriving late for class during the day are reported late by the subject teacher.

Any student arriving late for class during the day will be required to report to the detention room at 12:45 p.m. where he or she will work constructively until 1:15 p.m. Lunchtime detentions are given for various infractions. Any student who misses this detention will be suspended. Chronic tardiness or missed detentions will result in notification of parents, students being sent home, suspension and/or a meeting with parents.

Emergency Communication Form/Medical Form

Parents and/or guardians are asked to complete an emergency communication form which will give the school information as to where parents or guardians of students can be contacted in case of emergency, illness or injury. Please return this card promptly to the school in September. Students who require the administration of medication must return a signed medical waiver form that will be distributed in
September. Please notify the office immediately of any changes that occur during the school year.

Reports

Reports are issued four times during the school year. These reports are based on class tests, homework assignments, projects and examination results. All reports are taken home and a parental signature is required on the report card envelope. The envelope must be returned to the homeroom teacher to indicate that the report has been seen.

For students writing MELS exams, the mark indicated on the June report card is the school mark only. The final mark, which the student will receive from the Ministry in mid-July, is a composite of the Ministry examination and the school mark.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

In addition to the assigned Parent/Teacher interview nights, parents wishing to meet with the administration or staff concerning their child’s progress are asked to make an appointment through the main office by calling 514 637 2505.

Promotion

A student must obtain 60% in a subject in order to receive credits and to move on to the next academic level. The Lester B. Pearson School Board offers a summer school program for Secondary I, II & III for students who are not initially successful. Summer school for these levels is given in the core subjects only (English, French and Math). It should be noted that a student must achieve a mark of at least 45% to be eligible for summer school. The school will officially notify students and parents on the June report card if the student is a candidate for summer school. Students who fail too many subjects may not avail themselves of summer school. For more information, please visit the Lester B. Pearson website.

Books

Textbooks are supplied to students without charge. Books are the property of the School Board and must be returned to the school at the end of the year, or upon withdrawal from the school during the term. Any loss or damage beyond reasonable wear must be paid for in full. Once a textbook has been issued, it is the student’s responsibility to look after it carefully. Parents are asked to ensure that students cover textbooks in plain brown paper or plastic which should NOT be fastened to the textbook itself. Arrangements for final report card pick-up may be made if there are any outstanding charges for textbooks, library books or fines not paid by the end of the year.

Homework

Homework is essential to the learning process as it helps students to develop good study habits and to consolidate what has been taught or discussed in class. Students are encouraged to make complete and well organized notes for each subject. Students are expected to complete and return assignments on their due date. Strengths and weaknesses of the assignment are conveyed to the students. It is recommended that students do between 1 and 2 ½ hours of homework each evening. If no written work is assigned, this time should be spent reviewing material. This review will ready the students for upcoming tests. Students who fail to do their homework may be asked to remain after school by their subject teacher. A repeated offense or a failure to report to the subject teacher will result in a letter being sent home to parents. Repeated offenses will be reported to the office and a meeting with parents, teacher and student will be arranged.

Student Agenda

Each student is issued an Agenda Book at the beginning of the school year. The cost of this agenda book is included in the school fees. This book should be carried by the student to each class and used to write down homework assignments. This book is also used as a hall pass if students must leave class for any reason as well as for parent/school communication. If the student loses their agenda, they will be expected to purchase a new one from the school at a cost of $8.00.

School Supplies

School supplies must be purchased by the student according to teacher specifications.

Transportation

See "
School Board Policy on Transportation" (under Transportation Documentation) on the Lester B. Pearson School Board's web site.

Student School Fee

The school fees include a fee for each course and a basic activity fee. This fee also covers the cost of the yearbook, the school agenda, gym shirt, lunch hour supervision and many activities throughout the school year. Secondary V students will be required to pay an additional fee for the rental of graduation gowns and caps.

The school does not receive funds for special events from the School Board; therefore, they must be self-financed if activities are to continue. Parents are asked to contact the school if special arrangements for payment are required. The excuse of non-participation cannot be accepted. Activities are available for all.

Cafeteria

Our school cafeteria offers the students a good variety of healthy foods at reasonable prices during recess and lunch. Lunch includes such items as: hot soups, hot meals, nutritious fast foods, vegetables, salads, desserts and beverages. The complete meal, including soup and dessert, costs under $3.50. The students may purchase all items at affordable prices. Students may buy a lunch or bring one from home. However, they are expected to eat in the cafeteria.

Parent/Teacher Communication Protocol

Parents who have questions or concerns may want to follow this suggested procedure. Please always try to address the teacher first.

  • A note to the teacher via the agenda

  • A call to the school office requesting a call from the teacher

  • A call to the school office to request an appointment with a teacher

  • A call to the school office to request a call from an administrator

  • A meeting with administration and resource personnel

Please leave both work and home phone numbers so that a teacher or an administrator can return your call after school hours when necessary.
