Regular attendance is expected of everyone. Students who are habitually absent
or excused for part of the day jeopardize their academic success. Parents are
asked to ensure that students attend faithfully and are absent only through
illness or unavoidable circumstances. Parents must advise the office when
students will be absent for the day.
A Parent/Guardian must sign and date a note (found in the student agenda),
stating the reason and the duration of the absence. The student must bring their
agenda to the office on the first day of their return.
Punctuality
Students are expected to be punctual and to attend all classes and chosen
extra-curricular activities. The interruption of lessons and the inconveniencing
of fellow students are not acceptable and, consequently, disciplinary action
will result.
Classes begin at 8:55 a.m. A student who arrives after 8:55 a.m. will be
marked late by the homeroom teacher. Any student arriving after 8:55 a.m. must
report to the office. Students arriving late for class during the day are
reported late by the subject teacher.
Any student arriving late for class during the day will be required to report to
the detention room at 12:45 p.m. where he or she will work constructively until
1:15 p.m. Lunchtime detentions are given for various infractions. Any student
who misses this detention will be suspended. Chronic tardiness or missed
detentions will result in notification of parents, students being sent home,
suspension and/or a meeting with parents.
Early Dismissal
If a
student must leave during the school day, a note requesting early dismissal must
be written in the agenda and brought to the office. If an emergency arises
during the morning or the afternoon sessions, a student may leave school only
after signing out at the office. We will contact a parent for permission. The
student is required to bring a note to the office the following day for our
records.
Homework
Homework is essential to the learning process as
it helps students to develop good study habits and to consolidate what has been
taught or discussed in class. Students are encouraged to make complete and well
organized notes for each subject. Students are expected to complete and return
assignments on their due date. Strengths and weaknesses of the assignment are
conveyed to the students. It is recommended that students do between 1 and 2 ½
hours of homework each evening. If no written work is assigned, this time should
be spent reviewing material. This review will ready the students for upcoming
tests. Students who fail to do their homework may be asked to remain after
school by their subject teacher. A repeated offense or a failure to report to
the subject teacher will result in a letter being sent home to parents. Repeated
offenses will be reported to the office and a meeting with parents, teacher and
student will be arranged.
Books
Textbooks are supplied to students without charge. Books are the property of the
School Board and must be returned to the school at the end of the year, or upon
withdrawal from the school during the term. Any loss or damage beyond
reasonable wear must be paid for in full. Once a textbook has been issued,
it is the student’s responsibility to look after it carefully. Parents are asked
to ensure that students cover textbooks in plain brown paper or plastic which
should NOT be fastened to the textbook itself. Arrangements for final report
card pick-up may be made if there are any outstanding charges for textbooks,
library books or fines not paid by the end of the year.
Computer Room
All students using the school computer rooms must
have an Acceptable Use Policy contract signed by themselves and their parent
prior to using the rooms. Misuse of the school computer rooms could result in
fines and withdrawal from the facilities. Parents and students are required to
sign the computer room contract on the tear-out sheet in the student agenda. A
student who fails to comply with the rules of the computer room will lose the
privilege of using school computers.
Cafeteria
Our
school cafeteria offers the students a good variety of healthy foods at
reasonable prices during recess and lunch. Lunch includes such items as: hot
soups, hot meals, nutritious fast foods, vegetables, salads, desserts and
beverages. The complete meal, including soup and dessert, costs under $3.50. The
students may purchase all items at affordable prices. Students may buy a lunch
or bring one from home. However, they are expected to eat in the cafeteria.
Student
Agenda
Each
student is issued an Agenda Book at the beginning of the school year. The cost
of this agenda book is included in the school fees. This book should be carried
by the student to each class and used to write down homework assignments. This
book is also used as a hall pass if students must leave class for any reason as
well as for parent/school communication. If the student loses their agenda, they
will be expected to purchase a new one from the school at a cost of $8.00
School Supplies
School supplies must be purchased by the student
according to teacher specifications.
Lockers
Each student is supplied with a corridor locker
for books and clothes. Each student is responsible for the cleanliness of
his/her locker. Writing on the lockers is not permitted. Only school-issued
combination locks are used. The student is warned not to reveal his/her
combination to anyone. Lock combinations are held in a confidential file
in the office. Loss of articles in the past has usually been traced to failure
on the student’s part to lock his/her locker properly. Students may not share
corridor lockers. Students use a gym locker in the locker room only
during gym class to store their clothes. They must remove their lock from the
gym locker at the end of the gym class. No valuables should be left in any
locker.
IMPORTANT:
Students must push the shackle in completely
and turn the dial to lock the locks. OTHERWISE THE LOCK IS OPEN ON THE
LOCKER.
The school is not responsible for any lost or
stolen articles.
Students should lock up the gym locker.
While the school respects the student’s right to
privacy, the locker is on loan to the student and the school reserves the right
to inspect a student’s locker or school bag if the safety or security of any
student or staff member is deemed at risk.
Locks
Grade 7 students will be provided with two
combination locks. This is included in their school fees. Grade 8, 9, 10 and 11
students have already had locks given to them. If they have been lost they
must be purchased in the office at a cost of $8.00 each. All students taking
Physical Education must have two locks – one for their gym locker and one for
their regular locker.
Locks will be distributed to grade 7 students during the first days of school.
Electronic Devices
Use of all electronic devices is prohibited in the
building during class time.
Music Listening Devices and
Communication Devices
These devices should not been seen or heard
anywhere in the building during class time. Use is restricted to: before 8:55
am, recess, lunch time, and after 3:30 pm.
Recording Devices (Audio, Video,
Photo)
Use is prohibited at all times.
Telephones
There are pay phones available to students during breaks and after school hours.
Students are advised to keep a quarter in their pocket in order to call home.
When sudden illness occurs, or at times of emergency, students must report to
the office. A member of the office staff will call the parent.
Parking
Students are not permitted to park motor vehicles
on school property. The parking lots and driveways are out of bounds to students
who drive.
Front Lawn
All
ball playing must be done on the back field.
Dances
Every student requesting admission to a dance will be required to show their
current Lakeside Academy student ID card. Failure to do this will result in the
student not being admitted to the dance. (Reminder – school fees must be paid).
Students wanting to bring guests must have permission from the Administration.
Detention Room
Students attending the detention room are
expected:
To be in complete uniform.
To have sufficient school work to keep them
busy during the allocated time.
To adhere to all the other rules that apply to
a classroom situation.
Electronic gadgets are not permitted.
School Suspensions
A
student on suspension may never be on school property without the prior
permission of the administration and may not participate in any school activity.
Summer School
The
summer school curriculum will be based on the essential components of courses
offered during the regular school year. Students and parents should be aware
that there is not sufficient time to cover all course content during the 20
days. Important topics will be reviewed and taught, but it will be the students’
responsibility to make sure that they are properly prepared for the course
evaluations. Depending on the course at summer school, the evaluation may be
noted as a percentage of a “successful-unsuccessful” or
“completed-not-completed” descriptor.
To be admitted to summer school, take a tutorial class or write a supplemental
exam, a student must have followed the course during the school year.
Students may register for a maximum of two summer school courses.
