Leadership
at Lakeside
The
Lakeside Academy Leadership Program has greatly evolved over the years. Since
its inception in 1984, when students were part of the Pride Committee and took
care of providing school spirit for school events, it has grown to include a
Homeroom Class that meets every day to plan and run many of the major events and
projects around the school. The former Lachine High School Student Leadership
Program, now continuing on at Lakeside Academy, has produced fine leaders over
the years, and has provided students with skills, friendships, and memories that
will last them for a lifetime.
Student Leadership Philosophy
It
is our belief that high school should provide students with a complete
education, academic as well as personal development. The Leadership Program
provides students with opportunities to grow as people and to learn to work with
people. Here at Lakeside, we believe that students should have the opportunity
to be exposed to as many learning opportunities as possible. This is why we
encourage students to get involved in sports, in the arts, and in every type of
co-curricular activity that will help them develop academically as well as
socially.
It is a well-known fact that students who are involved at their school do well
academically as their motivation and time management skills improve. Most
students find that when they are busy and have a feeling of belonging, they are
happy.
Leadership Credit Course
These classes are open to Grade 10 or 11 students as an option. It is a 4-credit
course where students are evaluated weekly and at the end of the term. In order
to be accepted into this class, candidates must go through an interview process
and must choose this option on their course selection sheets. Prospective
candidates must demonstrate that they have the time and energy to put into the
program, and that they are able to carry their academic workload without any
problem. This option does not require any prerequisite course, but does require
students to have a positive attitude.
Leadership Skills
Students involved in the Leadership Program will have the opportunity to develop
many skills:
Lakeside Academy Leadership Events
Grade7 Camp:
Grade 7 camp is a two-day camp held in île Perrot. It is
organized by the Grade 11 Leadership students. During
the two days students participate in team-building
activities and get the chance to listen to a wonderful
motivational speech. It is a fun way for Grade 7
students to get to know each other, as well as the
senior students in the school.
Canadian Student Leadership Conference:
Every year Lakeside sends between two and three of their
most outstanding leaders to the conference, in hopes
that they will learn new things to bring back to school.
This year the conference was held in P.E.I. Students
learned new ways to bring the school together, through
team activities and motivational speakers. Students got
great ideas from other students from across Canada, and
also made life-long friends.
The Louise Pelletier Terry Fox Walk and Roast:
Lakeside Academy’s annual Terry Fox Walk and Roast is
Lakeside’s way of contributing to cancer research. Each
student must raise a minimum of ten dollars (although
more is encouraged) to participate in the walk. Students
walk from school to 32nd Avenue, where they turn around
and head back to school for a barbecue. This year we
have renamed the walk to honour the struggle and success
Mme Pelletier went through last year.
Provincial Leadership Conference:
Every year a Provincial Leadership conference is held in
Québec. It is a gathering of some of the best leaders
from across Quebec, including many Lakesides students.
During the conferences students get to meet new friends,
they listen to amazing motivational speakers, and learn
great new ideas for Lakeside students to get involved
in.
School Dances:
Lakeside holds two annual school dances, organized and
run by the Grade 10 and 11 Leadership students. A DJ
plays some of the latest hits as students get to dance
the night away. The dances are chaperoned by teachers
and administration. The night is a fun way for students
to socialize with each other outside of the classroom.
Sprit Weeks:
Throughout the year the Grade 10 and 11 Leadership
students put on various themed spirit weeks, full of
games and prizes in which all students participate. Each
year we have The 12 Days of Christmas, Earth Week,
Spirit Week, Halloween Week, Easter Week, and
Multicultural Week. These spirit weeks are a fun way to
get students involved, and a great way for younger
students to get to know and feel more comfortable around
the older students.
Winter Cotillion:
Held by the Central Students’ Committee, cotillion is a
semi-formal event for all senior LBPSB students, held at
the Airport Hilton. A night of dinner and dancing, and a
good time is to be had by all.
Variety Show:
The variety show is one of
Lakeside’s biggest events of the year. The show consists
of more than twenty wonderful acts put on by students
from every grade. Every year Lakeside hires a
professional choreographer who choreographs many dance
numbers put on by the L.A. dance troupe. This event is
organized by the Grade 11 Leadership students and it
definitely gives students a reason to “Take Pride
in Lakeside”.
Senior Ski Trip:
The senior ski trip is open to Grade 9, 10 and 11
students. It is a 3 to 4 day trip to Mont Sainte Anne in
Quebec City. It is a fun trip for expert skiers, and
provides lessons for adventurous beginners. It is a
great trip, which younger students look forward to in
the future.
School Play:
Every year the best Drama students at Lakeside come
together to put on a wonderful show. Directed by Miss
Schwartz, the show for 2008-2009 “FAME” was a great hit,
and had an amazing turnout. Who knew Lakeside had such
great talent?
TOPS:
Put on by the Lester B Pearson School Board, the Truly
Outstanding Pearson Show is a show that you will
definitely not want to miss! The best of the best from
all of the school board come together in one incredible
show. Singing, dancing, and much more, this show will
keep you wanting more.
LBPSB Camp:
The Lester B Pearson Leadership Camp is organized by
students from every school in the board and is a
three-day camp. Lakeside sends senior students to
participate as animators, and younger students as
campers. Participants make lots of new friends and
participate in tons of team-building ideas.
End of the Year Assembly:
Organized and hosted by the Grade 10 Leadership
students, they also perform the annual Lakeside Academy
Phoenix dance. The dance troupe puts on one last show,
and the Grade 11’s get to watch their final grad video
documenting their five amazing years at Lakeside. It is
a great end to the year.
